The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said in the Hadeeth narrated by At-Tirmidhiyy:
إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ لَا يَرَى بِهَا بَأْسًا يَهْوِي بِهَا فِي النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا
“Surely, a slave may utter a statement he deems harmless but it results in his falling the depth of 70 years into Hellfire”.
Al-Bukhaariyy and Muslim narrated it with slightly different wording:
إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ ما يَتَبَيَّنُ فِيْها يَهْوِي بِهَا فِي النَّارِ أَبْعَدَ مِمَّا بَيْنَ المَشْرِقِ والمَغْرِبِ
“Indeed the slave may utter a statement that he doesn’t see any harm in. Because of it, he will fall into Hellfire a distance further than what is between the east and the west”.
